Grandads’ greenhouse – the movie

The family built this in about two afternoons.

The floor is sand, boxed in with heavy timbers. The uprights at either end form a doorway (an old flyscreen) and a window (made of shadecloth). The plastic was stretched around the uprights and stapled in place – no staples on the hoops. The longitudinal plastic pipes stabilise and strengthen the hoops. All joins are done with Cobb & Co hitches using 2mm soft tie wire. The plastic was wrapped round a board held down by bricks, but this wasn’t strong enough for the wind and the plastic later had to be dug into the ground.

Grandad has filled the greenhouse with plants, which are growing well.
